Diabetes mellitus is a disease of the endocrine system that is associated with a lack of insulin in the body.
This causes the glucose content in the blood to rise, which leads to metabolic disorders and gradual damage to almost all functional systems in the human body. The disease is divided into type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Today, questions of nutrition and diet for diabetes of any type are an extremely serious issue that is raised by every patient after the diagnosis of the disease.
In general, proper nutrition for diabetes mellitus should be paid attention to daily, since without a diet a person's health deteriorates.
Tips for reducing sugar levels
A diet is necessary for patients with any type of diabetes, but nutritional recommendations differ for types I and II diabetes. In the latter, reducing excess weight through diet may be the only therapeutic measure.
The type of diabetes mellitus is determined by the treating endocrinologist.
- For type 1 diabetes: Proper nutrition is a necessary background for insulin therapy. If you do not pay attention to this, all efforts to lower blood sugar will be in vain: this indicator does not stabilize and this affects the condition of the blood vessels of all organs and systems.
- Type 2 diabetes: does not always require drug therapy.First of all, the patient is recommended a diet that contributes to weight loss.In this case, if the dynamics are good, medication may not be required at all.
General tips for lowering blood sugar:
- Reduce consumption of soft drinks, sodas and juices.Regular consumption of sweetened drinks increases the risk of developing diabetes by around 15%.When drinking tea and coffee, reduce the amount of cream and sweeteners.
- Try choosing unsweetened foods like unsweetened iced tea, yogurt, or unsweetened oatmeal. You can sweeten the food as you wish. Most likely, you will add much less sugar to your food than the manufacturer.
- Replace your favorite sweets with healthier foods.Instead of ice cream, you can mash frozen bananas and use a blender to blend the mixture into a wonderful dessert.Instead of your favorite milk chocolate, eat a piece of dark chocolate.
In mild diabetes, diet adherence is particularly important as it is practically the main method of treatment.
Differences in diet in type 1 and type 2 diabetes

In patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, a low-calorie diet (25–30 kcal per 1 kg of body weight) is necessary to prevent late complications of the disease. In this case, diet is extremely important and must be strictly adhered to.When creating a diet, you should pay particular attention to the balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
Patients with type 2 diabetes are prescribed a subcalorie diet (daily energy value of food 1600-1800 kcal). With such a diet, patients should lose around 300-400 g of body weight per week.If you are very overweight, the daily amount of calories is reduced to 15-17 kcal per 1 kg depending on the proportion of excess weight.
Nutritional Basics
In individual cases, the doctor prescribes a special diet for the diabetic, which must be adhered to in order to maintain normal body health.
When you start eating right, follow these simple rules every day:
- You need to eat small portions 5-6 times a day (every 2-3 hours).
- The ratio of proteins, carbohydrates and fats should be balanced.
- The amount of calories consumed through food should correspond to the patient's energy expenditure.
- A person must receive proper nutrition: certain vegetables and fruits, cereals, dietary meat and fish, natural juices without added sugar, dairy products, soups.
The diet of a patient with diabetes should be rich in vitamins, so it makes sense to include vitamin carriers in the diet: baker's yeast, brewer's yeast, rosehip decoction, SPP, dietary supplements.
